How a DID number works

  1. A customer dials your number. The call enters the public network and reaches our network at the point of presence nearest the carrier.
  2. We route it. The number is matched to the destination you set in the portal: a SIP trunk to your PBX, an extension, a ring group, an auto attendant, voicemail or an outside number.
  3. Your system answers. Signaling and media run over SIP, with TLS and SRTP if you use them, to your equipment or to the hosted PBX. Inbound is billed at $0.009 a minute.

Local numbers for Asterisk and FreePBX

What is a DID?
DID stands for Direct Inward Dialing: a phone number that reaches a specific extension or device on your phone system without a dedicated physical line. Any number of DIDs can share one SIP trunk, and each one routes where you choose.
How do I get free DID numbers?
We do not give numbers away; a US local number is $1.50 a month with a $1.00 setup and no contract. What costs nothing is the trunk itself: $0 per channel and no monthly trunk fee, so the number is the only recurring charge until you place calls. Porting is, volume discounts for 100 or more.
Can I get a number in any area code?
Almost. Inventory covers most US and Canadian area codes, including every major city; a few small or newly opened area codes have little inventory. Search above to see what is available right now, and ask us to source a specific area code if the search comes up empty.
What is the difference between a DID and a phone line?
A traditional line is a physical circuit carrying one call at a time. A DID is a number delivered over your internet connection through SIP trunking; many DIDs share one trunk, calls are billed per minute, and there is no wiring, no line rental and no channel count to buy.
