A DID (Direct Inward Dialing) number is a virtual phone number that routes incoming calls directly to a specific extension, department, or device on your phone system — without requiring a dedicated physical phone line for each number. DIDs are the foundation of modern business phone systems.
With traditional phone systems, you needed one physical phone line for each phone number. DID numbers eliminate that requirement. A single SIP trunk can carry hundreds of concurrent calls across different DID numbers, each routed to the right destination within your PBX. This is why DID numbers are dramatically cheaper than traditional phone lines.
Local DID numbers give your business a presence in specific cities and area codes. Customers see a familiar local number when you call them, and they can reach you by dialing a local number — even if your office is in a completely different city. This is sometimes called a "virtual local number" or "virtual presence."
IPComms provides local DID numbers in 300+ area codes across the US and Canada for just $1.50/month per number. Numbers are provisioned instantly and can be used with any SIP-compatible PBX including Asterisk, FreePBX, 3CX, and FusionPBX. Looking for free DID numbers to test with? A customer dials your local phone number (e.g., (212) 555-0100). The call enters the public telephone network (PSTN) like any normal phone call.
IPComms receives the call on our network and converts it to a SIP signal. The call is routed over the internet to your PBX or phone system using the SIP protocol.
Your PBX (Asterisk, FreePBX, 3CX, etc.) receives the SIP call and routes it based on the DID number dialed — to a specific extension, ring group, IVR menu, or call queue.
Multiple DIDs can share a single SIP trunk, and a single trunk can handle many concurrent calls. This makes DID numbers far more cost-effective than traditional phone lines.
We offer free DID numbers for testing and development. Get started without any commitment and upgrade when you're ready for production.

DID stands for Direct Inward Dialing. It's a virtual phone number that routes calls directly to an extension or device on your phone system without needing a dedicated physical phone line. DIDs enable businesses to have multiple phone numbers on a single SIP trunk.
IPComms offers free DID numbers for testing and development purposes. Sign up for an account and you can get started with free local numbers to test your SIP trunk configuration before committing to paid production numbers. See our free DID numbers guide for details.

A traditional phone line is a physical circuit (copper or fiber) that carries one call at a time. A DID is a virtual number that uses your internet connection via SIP trunking. Multiple DIDs can share a single SIP trunk, and a single trunk can carry many concurrent calls. This makes DIDs far more flexible and cost-effective than traditional phone lines.
